LaTeX is a document markup language popular with academics. It allows users to create well formated documents from a text editor or dedicated LaTeX editor.

Scribtex may not be ready to replace a desktop LaTeX editor yet, but in a comment on Hacker News Scribtex creator James Pallen writes that the following features are being worked on:
- Better history navigation
- Improvements in the editor to add functionality beyond syntax highlighting
- Push and pull access to the underlying git repository (you can e-mail james@scribtex.com to have this feature enabled for your account, but it's still being tested)
A better editor would certainly put it further along the path of being a full replacement. In the meantime, it's at least a useful tool for editing LaTeX on the go or collaborating on documents.
